It can happen to anyone, even a cybersecurity expert
Cyberwarfare has become a very real part of our business, our government, our technology and our culture. We’ve seen terms like hacking, cyber-security and DDoS explode into our popular vernacular and for good reason. Real cyber-attacks have increased exponentially in the past 12 months and the growing fear of them has gone off the charts. Still, many of us do not incorporate simple, best practices when it comes to things like creating passwords and engaging with social media.

Ordinary user – Cyber-Security Bible
The problem with the IT/Cyber Security Industry is ‘we’ are very good at sharing, and conversing about security exposures and vulnerabilities with other professionals. But at times in this conversation, the general unaware public can get, and are forgotten – and when they are remembered, the conversation can be just a tad too ‘cyber-speak’ for them to understand.
In February 2017, I saw ‘Hacked Again’ by Scott Schober advertised on Amazon, took a punt and purchased the book. Question – Is this a publication which should sit on every Security Professionals shelf? I think not. However, more to the point – is this a book which should sit on the shelves of every ordinary user who utilises the Internet to conduct on-line banking, commercial transitions, or who use Social Media? Here my answer is a resounding YES.
The beauty of this book is, out of real-world encounters with cyber-insecurity, Scott has crafted and translated the common cyber-risks we all face on an everyday basis, into simple language which even the most uninformed reader can understand, and In an age in which cybercrime is rife, and the associated losses are expected to reach around $2 Trillion by 2019, I can’t recommend this book enough to every user of the internet to serve as the best cyber-security bible and educational read they will ever access.

Accessible and worthwhile
Victims of cybercrime are typically portrayed as not quite “clued-up”: the pensioner who falls for the confidence scam and gives away a bank password, or the hulking company that has failed to keep pace with security developments and has its customer database stolen and leaked. As the owner of a small business that specialises in network security, Scott Schober did not quite fit this mould, yet he too fell prey to cybercrime, and resolved not only to learn from what happened, but to show everyone how they can learn as well.
Through a series of anecdotes about his experiences, as well as commentaries on security breaches at other companies that made national news, Schober guides the reader through a topic that is often depicted as an impenetrable domain. The book is clearly written with the non-technical reader in mind, so is not steeped in jargon (on the occasions that it is used, it is explained in a clear way), making it accessible while still moving past basic advice about passwords to show the various facets of modern business and personal security. I’m familiar with the field, and I still learned a great deal that was new to me.
